AS Roma won't travel to Spain for their Europa League match against Sevilla on Thursday after the Italian team's plane was not given authorization to land in the country, the Serie A club announced Wednesday.

Further details are expected to be revealed by UEFA.

Although no reason was given, Roma's plane was likely prohibited from landing over fears pertaining to the coronavirus. Italy has seen a sharp rise in COVID-19 cases in recent days.

Despite Roma not being authorized to land, Italian club Atalanta did travel to Spain to face Valencia on Tuesday in a Champions League match that was played without fans.

Meanwhile, the Italian government has announced nationwide travel restrictions and suspended all sporting events in the country until April 3 in an effort to stop the spread of the virus.

In Spain, La Liga announced Tuesday that the top two divisions will be played behind closed doors for two weeks.
